QUESTION:
I just bought a 4-year-old paint mare. She has had some handling but not much. I am trying to teach her to lounge but all she does is buck in place and refuses to go foreword. What do I do?
ANSWER:
Hi Kathy,
Start in a round pen by free lounging her and get her used to moving away from the whip. Then you can step in her direction to cut her off and get her to change direction. Then use the line on her without a chain next, still staying in the round pen. Eventually she will get used to your voice commands, cluck to walk or trot, kiss to lope, and whoa to stop. If you are going to own a horse, it is mandatory to own a round pen or have access to one. I use mine everyday at work. It is as important as a saddle or bridle.
Thanks…
Mark
