QUESTION:

Hi! I just bought a 2002 AQHA mare and her previous owners have already given a very solid walk/jog western pleasure foundation. However, I’d like to know how old she should be before loping her under saddle. Thanks!

ANSWER:

Hi Cat, go on and lope, most horses are started while they are just turning two years old. Unless she is so small that you feel you might hurt her, and in that case use your vet to answer any other concerns. Your horse is three years old so just wrap her front legs with polo wraps or splint boots and get at it. If she is like all other normal sized Quarter Horses, you are a year behind in training.

Thanks…

Mark
