QUESTION: How do I get my yearling to lounge?

ANSWER:

Hi Samantha,

It is easiest to teach a young horse to lounge in a round pen if you have one available. First they must lead well and then put them out about half ways on the line and walk them first before you trot or lope. Walk towards their hip and encourage them to go forward with light encouragement from a whip or rope. I usually pony my young horses first before I lounge them and they seem to learn faster. Take your time and accept a little progress every day, and don’t expect them to figure it out all at once.

Thanks…

Mark
